Oliver Alexander was likely born in Pennsylvania about 1732 and moved south into Augusta County, Virginia by 1772. In 1776 he signed a petition in Fincastle County, Virginia. Soon thereafter Fincastle ceased to exist and became Montgomery Co., Washington Co., and part of Kentucky. In October 1780 he fought on the side of the Patriots at King's Mountain under Captain David Beattie, after which time Oliver lived in Washington County, Virginia where he received a land grant from the State of Virginia for 190 acres on both sides of 15 Mile Creek.

He married Margaret Paul about 1765. His children include
Ebeneezer Alexander who married Elizabeth Rogers
John Alexander who married Polly Whitaker
Margaret Paul Alexander who married John Duncan
Abigail Alexander who married Robert Hooke in 1795 in Blount Co
Benjamin Gray Alexander who married Ruth Wallace in 1799 in Blount Co
Susan Alexander who married James McGinley
Adam Rankin Alexander who married Leah Reagan

His daughter, Margaret Alexander, married John Duncan at Fort Craig in July 1788 near present day Maryville in Blount County, TN “at the time the Indian hostilities were raging.”

When Blount County Tennessee was formed in 1795, Governor Blount appointed Oliver as one of the county's first magistrates.

Oliver is believed to have died in 1812-1813 in Blount or Sevier County, Tennessee. Others believe he was buried in Maury County, TN.
