Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late James and Eliza Barnette; and husband of the late Mary Ellen Barnette.
Mr. Barnette served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and retired as an electrical inspector for the City of Greenville.
Claude was a Master Mason and a member of Woodman of the World.
He is survived by two daughters, Shelby Jean Alexander (James), Rhonda Faye Hester (Randy); four sons, James Edward Barnette (Donna), Jessie Newton Barnette (Brenda), Claude James Barentte, Jr. (Phyllis), and Jerry Franklin Barnette (Lynn); 14 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Freeman; and a brother, John H. Barnette.
He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Taylor Marie Beardon.
