   Former alderman and police magistrate Elmer E. Betzold, 320 Liberty St., died Friday in St. Joseph's Hospital in Highland. He was 77.
   Mr. Betzold had been a patient in the hospital six weeks.
   He was a First Ward alderman several terms and served as police magistrate four years. He was a member of the Edwardsville Volunteer Fire Department for more than 45 years.
   He had lived in Edwardsville all his life.
   Mr. Betzold was married to Frances Utechtt on May 10, 1916 in Eden Church in Edwardsville. Mrs. Betzold survives.
   The couple celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary last year.
   Mr. Betzold worked for N.O. Nelson Co., and as a meatcutter.
   He was born June 9, 1890, in Edwardsville, the son of the late Fred and Amelia Rohrkaste Betzold.
   He was a member of Eden United Church of Christ.
   In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Clarence Hofeditz of Edwardsville; two sisters, Mrs. Herbert Wickenhauser of Alton and Hazel Betzold of Edwardsville, and three grandsons.
   Mr. Betzold was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.
   Services are scheduled at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the Weber Funeral Home in Edwardsville.
   The Rev. Donald E. Crismon will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
   Friends may call at the funeral home after 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
   The Volunteer Fire Department will hold a service at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
