Twnety-Five Year Old Former Alvarado Resident
Shot to Death in Gangland Fashion Last Week

A 28 year old Alvarado native and ex-convict who has been out of federal prison less than a month was found shot to death in a desolate part of Johnson County late Tuesday afternoon of last week.
The gangland style killing ended the life of Arthur Eugene Gregory whose bullet-riddled body was discovered sprawled across two stands of barbed wire fence 1-1/4 miles west of Lillian. The man's hands were clinched as if he was saying a prayer.
Johnson County Sheriff Earl King said Gregory had been shot three times, in the mouth, right temple and under the right arm.

Trail of Blood

A trail of blood indicated Gregory was shot on the gravel road possibly in an auto. He then fled into the clump of trees and was tripped by the barbed wire fence.
The assiant apparently then followed, and sho him agin in the head.
The body of the slightly-built man was seen by an 11-year-old boy, Sammy Owens.
Sammy was riding in a pickup driven by his father, Sam Owens of Burleson shortly before dark when he noticed the body.
Boy Reports

"There's a man lying out there in the woods that doesn't have any shoes on" the boy told his father.
Ownes stopped and noticed the man was clad in light clothing. The dead man was wearing a white undershirt and blue jeans. He wore no shoes or socks.
Owens drove on to Lillian and summonded Bryce Pollard, longtime Lillian resident. They returned to the scene, then telephoned the Cleburne sheriff's office.
Johnson County Sheriff Earl King and several deputies wen to the scene, District Attorney Robert Mahanay and County Attorney Hugh B. Higghs also went.
Judge J.W. Adcock of Alvarado returned a verdict of murder. The justic of the peace ordered an autopsy.

Small Caliber Slugs

Officers said the wounds appearded to have been made by a small-caliber slugs.
A number of scratches and abrasions were on the man's body. Dist. Atty. Mahanay said it had not been determined how the scratches were made.
Only a cigarette lighter, a comb and a set of car keys were found onthe man's body, officers said.

Several Tattooes

The man had several tattooes on his arms. Two on one arm read "Anthony & Jennie" and "Juanita."
Another tattoo on his left leg said, "Hell is my last stop."
Gregory was born in Alvaado, and had been released at Leavenworth,Kansas, Jan 2 of this year.
Funeral servces were held Friday afternoon in Ft. Worth, and burial was in the Bethesda Cemetery five miles north of Alvarado.
