More is known of Emeline's family, her two husbands and her children than of Emeline.

She was born in Morgan County, Alabama on Christmas Eve, 1822, the sixth of eleven children. Circa 1828-1829, when she was six or seven, she moved with her family to Arkansas where she lived the rest of her life. The family settled in Horsehead County Township (Pope and later Johnson County). Her father was a cotton planter who was issued patents for substantial amounts of land in the county. In 1829, the Arkansas Territory General Assembly elected him Justice of the Peace for Horsehead Township. In 1830, he was elected Clerk of the Circuit Court for Pope County. He also served as Scotia Postmaster.

An early settler of Washington county, he was the son of William S. Wallace and brother of Willis S., Riley and Alfred. He was appointed Appraiser of Land by the governor in 1836, founded and owned the Fayetteville Jockey Club, served as Washington County Coroner from 1838-1840 and was issued land patents in Washington County. Her mother had died in 1844, soon after arriving in Texas.
