Charlotte Gorham was born in Barnstable, MA 27 June 1786, the daughter of Captain Sturgis Gorham, Esq., a Patriot during the American Revolution, and Desire Taylor. She was descended from Mayflower passengers John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley. Charlotte married Englishman Thomas Leader Harman in New Orleans in 1813. Mr. Harman was one of the first Alderman of the City of New Orleans representing the 5th Ward (French Quarter). They had three children: Thomas Leader Harman Jr.; Francis Sheppard Harman and Charlotte Gorham Harman. Ms. Harman later married Henry William Eaton,MP, 1st Baron Cheylesmore, United Kingdom. Charlotte Harman died in Bath, Somerset, England in December 1821 at age 35. She was also the aunt of John Gorham Palfrey, American clergyman and historian who also served as a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts.
