He was baptized at an early age at Zion Apostolic Memorial Church in Petersburg, Va. Mr. Balthrop was a graduate of Petersburg High School Class of 1966. He served in the U.S. Air Force two years. Also, he was employed at Brown and Williamson Tobacco Co. He is preceded in death by his wife, Matilda Jones Balthrop; son, Stephen Arkell Balthrop (aka Steph B); and sister, Katherine (Kitty) Balthrop.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory one devoted daughter, Sonya Balthrop; one devoted son, Tony Thompson (Cheese), all of Petersburg; seven grandchildren, Kimberly Fogg, Jalen Brown, Jordan Campbell, Cherokee Tatum, Anjel Jordan and Janel Jordan, all of Petersburg, Va., and Tonisha Pruden of Georgia; two brothers, Clarence Balthrop (Bonnie) of California and Johnny Balthrop (Mary) of North Carolina; two sisters, Adrian Balthrop and Sandra Robinson of New York; three brothers-in-law, Robert Turner (Nancy) of Delaware, Fredrick Thomas and Roderick Thomas of Boston; one sister-in-law, Virginia Blizzard of Chesterfield, Va.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, among them devoted Judy Shaw, Melvin Brown and Don Balthrop.
A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 2, 2012, from the chapel of William N. Bland & Son Funeral Home, with Bishop Willie L. Balthrop Sr. officiating. Interment will be held at Mount Sinai Community Cemetery, Prince George.
Family and friends are asked to assemble at the funeral home 10:30 a.m. on day of service.
