WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Iris Southern Bowles, 98, died Monday, January 3, 2011 at Village Care in King. She was born September 23, 1912 in Stokes County to William Amos and Cora Hicks Southern. She retired from the Stokes County School System with 45 years of service as a teacher. Mrs. Bowles was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Walnut Cove for more than 70 years where she had served as a Sunday school teacher and other duties. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, John Harvey Bowles, a son, John Van Bowles and daughter-in-law, Gayle White Bowles, one sister, Alma Southern Barr, and two brothers, Gilmer G. Southern and Curtis W. Southern and wife Henrietta Smith Southern. She is survived by two grandchildren, Tammy Bowles Bennett and husband Mike, and Rodney Van Bowles and wife Shannon all of King; four great grandchildren, Josh and Joey Allen, and Tyler and Taylor Bowles; one step-great grandson, Adam Bennett; two nephews, Curtis Southern, Jr., and wife Juanita and children, and Gilmer Southern, Jr. and wide Odessa and their children; and a very special friend, Mary Sue Scott. The family will receive friends beginning at Noon on Thursday, January 6, at Slate Funeral Home in King with the service to follow at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Keith Heitman will officiate. Burial will follow in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and thanks to Bethel Baptist Church family, and the neighbors and friends for all their continuing prayers, support and care to Iris during the many years of her life.
