Well Known York Presbyterian Minister Succumbs
York, Jan 21 [1919] -- The Rev W B Arrowood, D D, one of the best known Presbyterian ministers in York County, died at his home in Sharon Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. He as in his usual health when suddenly stricken with paralysis, which terminated fatally within a few hours. Funeral services were conducted at his home this morning at 11 o'clock and the interment was in the Sharon Cemetery.
Dr Arrowood was 68 years old, having been born in Gaston County, North Carolina, April 1, 1850. He received his academic education at Davidson College and was afterward graduated from Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Va. He did mission work first in the mountains of Virginia, then in Stanley County, North Carolina, from which place he moved to Matthews, NC. After a pastorate here and at Laurinburg, NC, he was called to the historic old Bethel Church in York County, near Clover. His charge here lasted from 1900 to 1910, when he moved to Sharon to serve Woodlawn Church, of which he was the pstor when he died. The degree of doctor of divinity was conferred upon him by Davidson College and the Presbyterian College of South Carolina in 1913.
In May, 1879, Dr Arrowood was married to Miss Mary Pharr, daughter of the Rev W W Pharr, D D, a noted minister of his day. Mrs Arrowood died March 23, 1914. Surviving are three children, Mrs George Plexico and Miss Isabelle Arrowood of Sharon ad the Rev W W Arrowood of Tazewell, Va.
Dr Arrowood was a man of keen intellect, broad vision and deep sympathy for his fellow men. He was a inister of far more than ordinary ability, easily ranking as one of the best informed and most scholarly preachers in Bethel Presbytery. He had the courage of his convictions nd wielded a powerful influence for good in every community in which he resided. In his death the church and the community suffer an irreparable loss.
