Mrs. Frances Eunice Wheat, widow of Josiah H. Wheat, died at 8 o'clock Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. J. Arnold, 1007 North Second Street. Notwithstanding her advanced years, her decline came suddenly, as it was only a few weeks ago that she attended the rally day exercises at Westminster church and gave her response on the rollcall more distinctly than many of the younger members. It is a fact worthy of note that her death came with in a few hours of that of her old Friend, Charles L. Williams. They had labored together many years as members of the same church.

Frances Eunice Wheat was born in Choconut, Pennsylvania, February 22, 1816, and she was therefore in her 97th year. When she was seven years of age she removed to Hornby, New York, where she lived until her removal to Illinois. Her marriage to Josiah H. Wheat was solemnized at her home in Hornby, February 12, 1835.

Mr. and Mrs. Wheat came to Rockford December 3, 1845, where they spent the remainder of their lives. Mrs. Wheat resided here sixty-seven years. Mr. and Mrs. Wheat were charter members of Westminster Presbyterian church, which was organized January 3, 1856, with twenty-two members. Mrs. Wheat was the last survivor of that honored group, and was a leader in the work of her church until the infirmities of age compelled her to retire from the activities of life. Even then her interest was unbated.

Mrs. Wheat's life nearly spanned the most momentous century in all history. To few, indeed, it is given to enjoy life in such goodly measure and to retain faculties unclouded. She maintained to the last a lively interest in her home, her church, and in current events. To her was verified the promise, made by the sweet singer of Israel to the faithful of the lord, "With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation."

Mrs. Wheat is survived by three daughters, Mrs. C.A. Church and Mrs. W.J. Arnold of Rockford, and Mrs. J.B. Davis, of Harper, Kansas. Three more daughters preceded her into the more abundant life. Mr. Wheat died April 22, 1897

The funeral will be held at the home of W.J. Arnold, Park Ridge, 1007 North Second Street at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Charles J. Wilson will officiate and interment will be in Cedar Bluff Cemetery.
