Melvin L. Conner, 73, 5691 N. County Road 850-W, died today in Ball Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was a lifetime resident of the Yorktown-Cammack area. He taught business education at Harrison Township schools for six years and then taught business education at Yorktown High School for 20 years before retiring in 1980.

Mr. Conner was instrumental in starting the DECA program at Yorktown High School. He was a member of Cammack American Legion Post 327. He had served in several branches of the United States military from 1942 through 1946.

He was a graduate of Ball State Teacher's College (now Ball State University).

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Helen Conner; two stepsons and their wives, Michael and Hazel Lee, Muncie, and Larry and Judy Lee, Anderson; a brother, Jr. O. Conner, Muncie; a daughter-in-law, Esther Darlene Lee; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several niece and nephews, including Barbara Redwine, Albany.

A stepson, Roger D. Lee, and a sister, Betty Kindall, are deceased.

Services will be at Parson Mortuary-Adams Chapel at 3 p.m. Saturday. Burial will follow in Hawk Cemetery near Yorktown, where American Legion graveside services will be conducted. Calling at the mortuary will be 1 to 3:30 and 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday.
