Rollie S. Berlin, 95, of Whig Hill, died Friday at the Kane Hospital. Born in Whig Hill, Forest County, he was the son of the late Eugene E. and Anna Viola Kiffer Berlin. He married the former Alda E. Gould on May 14, 1921, and she survives. Rollie was a U.S. Army veteran of World War I.
Friends will be recieved from 7 to 9 Saturday at the Haslet-Wimer Funeral Home in Tionesta. There will be no visitation on Easter Sunday. Funeral services will be held at 1pm Monday in the funeral home. Rev. John Milstead, pastor of the Tionesta Church of God, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Hindman Cemetery, Whig Hill.

A Tribute to Rollie S. Berlin

Rollie S. Berlin was born May 30, 1896 at Ross Run, Forest County, the son of Eugene E. and Anna Viola Kiffer Berlin.
Rollie attended the Whig Hill one room school house for eight years. The school was located where the Whig Hill Election Hall now stands. He joined the service on October 17, 1917. He then went to France where he was stationed from May 1918 to May 1919 as a Corporal of the 80th Military Police Company. He was one of the three remaining veterans of World War I, living in Forest County at the time of his death.
On May 14, 1921, Rollie married Alda Gould, from Kellettville, with the Justice of the Peace, C.A. Randall officiating at the Rural House Parlor of Tionesta. They started their married life at the Royston Pump Station. From there they moved to State Bridge, where Rollie built a three room home, that he papered with brick paper. Alda says it was the cutest little home. At this time, Alda's parents lived in Kellettville on the Kribbs and Ray farm, where Alda drove horse and buggy to the day before their son Ralph was born. While at State Bridge, they moved to the Pierson Farm for a short while. They then moved to Kellettville, and farmed the Pierson Farm and Rollie worked on the state highway. While living in Kellettville, they bought fifty-five acres of ground, in 1936, on Whig Hill. They built a two room cabin to live in while they cleared the land to build the farm that they lived in until 1992. Rollie was still working on the state highway while clearing the farm. He retired from the highway in 1958 and farmed his farm until 1992. All this time Alda was helping build the farm, taking in extra washing and ironing, plus hunters to help make ends meet.
On January 6, 1992, they moved to Snyder Memorial Nursing Home in Marienville, after selling their farm to their great niece. Alda says all their moving was done by team and wagon except to Snyder Memorial.
Rollie had a great many interesting stories to tell about his life and jobs he had. Anyone listening could have learned a lot of the old times and how things were done in the early years. Rollie and Alda were always ready to lend a helping hand to one and all. They were and are two great people.
Rollie passed away on Good Friday, March 17, 1992. He was laid to rest at Hindman Cemetery on Whig Hill, Forest County.
Alda is still residing at the Snyder Memorial Nursing Home in Marienville.
