WOMAN SLAIN IN SONORA TAVERN
Flea market regular "Cast Iron Jack' then turns gun on himself
A woman was shot dead last night at The Office Bar on South Washington St in Sonora by a former sheriff's candidate who then turned the gun on himself.
Sonora police who responded to the call at 7:32 pm reported that Mary Lou Sharrock, 65, was dead on the scene. Jack Bean, 69, is listed in critical condition this morning at Memorial Hospital in Modesto.
Sharrock and Bean, who ran unsuccessfully for sheriff in 1986, had known each other for some time and were having romantic problems. The had been in The Office Bar in Sonora since mid-afternoon. According to the owner of the bar Bean was trying to convince Sharrock to get back together and she refused. At about 6 pm Bean reportedly left the bar, returning shortly after 7. Bean approached Sharrock and two spoke before he went to another part of the bar. He came back to her, pulled a .38 caliber revolver from his pocket and shot her once in the head. Bean's daughter, Marlene Otto, was sitting at the bar beside Sharrock when the shooting occurred. Bean then brandished the gun around the bar. There were between 10 and 15 customers int he bar at the time
According to police, Bean fired two shots, injuring no one, the turned the gun and shot himself once in the head. Frank Smart, the bartender at the nearby Horseshoe Club, has known Bean and Sharrock for years. He said Bean and Sharrock, a "really sweet person" had lived together for a couple of years and split up recently. The bar owner said Sharrock was "a sweet old lady, real quiet. She never said a bad word about anybody."
Bean was born and raised in Sonora and was graduated from Sonora High School. A trucker for most of his life, Bean moved to Sacramento in 1968 but returned to this county to retire in 1976. When he announced his candidacy for sheriff in 1986 he stressed his years in the county.
"I know just about everyone here, I'm an old timer, I know what the people here want and need."
Bean and Sharrock were frequent vendors at the Mother Lode flea market where Bean developed the nickname "Cast Iron Jack" from selling cast iron pots and pans.
Bean was transported immediately to Sonora Community Hospital then flown shortly afterward by Medi-Flight to Memorial Hospital in Modesto.
