HOOVER, Jr., Allan Grandson of President Herbert Hoover, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, March 22, 2013. He was 74. A long time resident of California, Allan enjoyed fishing and sailing and was first employed by Walt Disney at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, General Dynamics in Pomona, and Marsh & McLennan in San Francisco. After moving to Sacramento, CA in 1974, Allan owned and operated 'Al's Snack Shop' through the California Business Enterprise Program for the Legally Blind and the Blind, serving the STRS building for 20 years, retiring in 1994. In retirement, Allan Jr. enjoyed collecting antiques, books and records and was an avid supporter of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Uncommon Student Award program in West Branch Iowa, The Smithsonian, and local northern California organizations KVMR, The Crocker Art Museum, and the California State Railroad Museum. He is survived by his oldest daughter Deborah Elizabeth Farmer and son-in-law Jonathan Farmer, son Allan Hoover III, daughter-in-law Michelle Hoover, grandchildren Mary Elizabeth Hoover, Andrew Charles Hoover and Thomas Allan Hoover, youngest son James Charles Hoover, younger brother Andrew Hoover, sister-in-law Jeanie Hoover, niece Margaret Claire Hoover, nephew Alexander Hoover, and countless friends he met throughout his life that he loved dearly. Although born legally blind, Allan Jr. lived an independent life that defied any challenges he could have faced. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to the Uncommon Student Award Program, Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association, 302 Parkside Drive, West Branch, IA 52358. Donations will also be honored at the Stanford Children's Home and Sacramento Receiving Home. A memorial service, open to the public, will be held for Allan Hoover Jr. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Folsom, CA on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. A family service will be held for him in West Branch, IA on June 22.
