BLOOMINGTON — Upon traveling most of the United States during his lifetime, Wendell Buck Alexander, 94, Bloomington, took his final journey at 9 a.m. Thursday (July 4, 2013) in Bloomington.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington. His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the memorial home, with the Rev. Scott Carnes officiating. Burial will be in Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington, with his grandsons and great-grandsons serving the honor of pallbearers. After the services, family and friends are invited to a remembrance gathering at the home of Terry Alexander, 912 Mayflower Avenue. Mr. Alexander's funeral procession will include his pride and joy, his 1954 truck, which he completely restored and built a solid oak bed himself.
Mr. Alexander was born Jan. 29, 1919, in Normal, the son of Archie and Adah Buck Alexander. He lived his entire life on the Alexander farm which had been in his family over 100 years. He farmed that farm since he was 16 years old upon the death of his father. He also had a milk route in the area for many years.
He is survived by his loving wife, Pauline Alexander of Bloomington. This past February 14 they celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary.
Left behind to remember their father are three sons, Terry and Karen Alexander, Bloomington; Tom and Helen Alexander, Indianapolis; and Tim and Sheila Alexander, LeRoy; grandsons, Brett (Joann) Alexander and Barton Alexander, both of Bloomington; Bradley S. Alexander and Jason (Sarah) Alexander, both of Normal; and Michael (Rachel) Bray, North Hollywood, Calif.; granddaughters, Amy Alexander, Indianapolis; Wendy Alexander, Bloomington; and Lang Wilson, Bloomington. There are 14 great-grandchildren, Kyle, Keegan, Braden, Jordan, Brooklyn, Draper, Preston, Brianna, Benjamin, Brady, McKenna, Joseph, Maxwell and Michaela.
He is also survived by one sister, Lola (Richard) Jones, Bloomington; as well as several nieces in the Bloomington area.
Along with his parents, Wendell was preceded in death by his grandson, Bradley S. Alexander; and his brother, Russell Alexander.
The family will miss this man who was the patriarch of this family and gave all of them the biggest treasure – himself. Wendell was a man of few words, but when he spoke you listened, as his advice was priceless.
Wendell had passion for woodworking, an awesome hat collection and matches from just about anywhere you could think of. He loved spending time tinkering in the shed. He absolutely LOVED to farm. But more than anything, he loved his family. He was a humble man, with the patience of a saint, a heart of gold and a love for life so few of us are able to experience.
The family wishes to extend a special "Thank You" to his granddaughter Lang, who gave special care and comfort to make his final days some of the best as she always made him smile as well as his eyes twinkle.
