Melvin G. Montgomery was born June 25, 1910 on a farm southeast of Leonard. His parents were Philip A. Montgomery and Ivy M. Waters Montgomery.

He had one sister and two brothers: Leota C. Poore, James O., and Elliott A. He attended Enterprise school.

Mrs. Vivian G. Gillaspy Montgomery, his wife, was born Nov. 10, 1909 on a farm southwest of Leonard. She was the daughter of George C. Gillaspy and Lula G. Bodwell. Vivian has one sister, Virginia R. Gillaspy (Mrs. Tom Boren). Vivian and Virginia graduated from Leonard High School.

Melvin G. Montgomery and Vivian G. Gillaspy were married May 19, 1930 in Kansas City in a Christian parsonage by Rev. O.E. Grimes.

They lived on a farm southeast of Leonard until March 1933 and moved to Leonard where Melvin continued hauling livestock, grain, and coal. They became members of the Leonard Christian Church.

They were the parents of four children: Fern E.; Harold V.; Meredith D.; and James Norman Montgomery.

On Feb. 15, 1940 Melvin's moved north of Clarence where he continued hauling and on Nov. 10, 1943 they moved to their farm two miles north of Clarence. All the children graduated from Clarence High School. Fern lives in Clarence, Harold and Norman in Independence, and Meredith in Kansas City.

Melvin passed away of a heart attack on May 4, 1973. He was buried in Maplewood Cemetery on May 6, 1973. Vivian still lives on the farm.
