Joe was born in Texas. He visited his uncle, McKinza Joseph Robertson and family in Quay County, New Mexico and married his cousin, Clara Belle Robertson. They had ten children. It was during the depression and the family moved often as Joe followed jobs. His daughter, Margie, told how her father would get them settled in a new place as close to his current job as possible. He would plow a large garden plot and Clara and the children would plant a garden. Often Joe would only be able to come home on weekends. Margie said the garden provided food for the family during the summer and "they canned the rest of the garden for winter." The family lived in various places in New Mexico and Texas through the years. Clara and Joe spent their senior years in the Kennedale community of Tarrant County, south of Fort Worth.
