She was the daughter of a prominent Jewish banker of Richmond. Her marriage to Edward Mayo (a son of an old Virginia family) was something of scandal - they had to elope in North Carolina and eventually settled in Elizabeth New Jersey where her husband's grandparents lived. Notably, Elizabeth New Jersey was the first town in the US to have a Jewish mayor.

Her children returned to Richmond and were for the most part accepted back into Richmond society.
