Born to Jesse Edwin Smith (1878-1932) & Mary Eunice Henderson Smith (1877-1937). Ed was named for his maternal grandfather, Lemuel Kenneth Henderson (1849-1937) & his father, Jesse Edwin Smith. Ed married Ruth Henderson on Feb. 1, 1939. Four children.

Lemuel Edwin "Ed" Smith, 88, of Lubbock died Monday, April 25, 2005, in Lubbock, following a battle of many years with Parkinson's disease.

He was born July 7, 1916, in Ozona to Jesse Edwin and Eunice Smith, and grew up in the Del Rio area, where the family was engaged in ranching and operated a boarding house. He attended Del Rio High School, where he played football and basketball, and met his future bride, Ruth Henderson. They were married Feb. 1, 1939.

Ed won a football scholarship to Texas Technological College, where he was a letterman, graduating in 1938. He received an MBA from the University of Texas.

Ed served as a lieutenant in the Navy during World War II, stationed in Panama, and later served in the Naval Reserve.

He returned to Lubbock, serving as assistant to the president of Texas Tech and practicing as a certified public accountant. Until his retirement, he was a partner in the accounting firm of Pratas, Smith & Moore, CPA's. He was licensed as a CPA in Texas and Louisiana and was a 50-year member of the American Institute of CPA's.

Ed was inducted into the Tech Athletic Hall of Honor, and served a term as president of the Red Raider Club. He was honored for outstanding professional achievement and distinguished service to accounting education at Texas Tech.

Ed was active in community work. He was on the board of directors and served as chairman of First Federal Savings & Loan Association. He was a loyal and active member of St. John's United Methodist Church, and served on the board and in many other capacities. Other community service included the Texas Tech Museum Board, Girl Scouts, the CH Foundation (later serving as president-emeritus), Lubbock Housing Authority, Rotary Club, United Fund, Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, and the board of St. Mary's Hospital. He was chairman of the Football Coaches All-America Game in 1971. He served in many other civic and charitable capacities.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Ruth Henderson Smith; children, Jerry Smith and wife Mary Jane of Houston, Donna Smith of Dallas, Claudia Lancaster and husband Randy of May, and Jennifer Smith of New York City; and grandchildren, Ruth Ann Smith of Houston, Adam Lancaster of Lubbock, Paige Newsom and husband Cory of San Antonio, and Clark and J.J. Smith, both of Houston; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ed is predeceased by his parents; his sister, Mildred Stahl; and his brother, Milton Smith.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 28, 2005, at St. John's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kathryn Boren officiating, and the Rev. Ted Dotts and the Rev. Bobby McMillan assisting. There will be a reception following the service in the Garden Room.
