Helen H. Robertson, age 77, went home to the Lord at 5:15 p.m. Monday July 1, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Helen was born on June 29, 1936 in Council Hill, Okla. the daughter of the late Perry and Ruth (Myers) Hicks. She attended Council Hill High School where she was an excellent basketball player, graduating in 1954. Following graduation she married Ewin E. Robertson on May 29, 1954. They moved to Duenweg, Mo. in 1958. She worked as a seamstress in her early years and she helped her husband build and decorate several homes. She enrolled at Missouri Southern State College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She began her teaching career at Emerson Elementary School for the Joplin R-8 School District, retiring from Cecil Floyd Elementary in 1995. She was a founding member of the 26th & Connecticut Church of Christ where she was active in teaching Sunday school and numerous church activities. She enjoyed reading and was a member of a local book club. She was an accomplished artist and an excellent cook. Most of all she loved taking care of her family.
Helen's family includes; her husband of fifty-nine years Ewin E. Robertson, Joplin; two daughters and son-in-laws; Pam Houk and husband Steve, Joplin, and Kim Woodard and husband Bruce, Joplin; four grandchildren; Amanda Eggleston and husband Brandon, Joplin, Austin Woodard, Joplin, Ashlee Woodard and fiancé Kevin Schiller, both of Springdale, Ark.; and Alex Woodard, Joplin; three great-grandchildren, Allie , Brody, and Kennedy Eggleston; three brothers, Harold Hicks and wife Kay, Texarkanna, Tx., Gibson Hicks, Tulsa, Okla., and David Hicks and wife Patty, Bixby, Okla.; brother-in-law Shelby Robertson, Bixby, Okla.; sister-in-law, Myrldean Govier, Omaha, Neb.; and numerous nieces, nephews and her adopted Palmer family. She was preceded in one brother, Foster Hicks; sister-in-laws, Joyce Hicks, Billye Robertson, and Arlene Hicks.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to doctors, nurses and staff at M.D. Anderson; Avalon Hospice, and a special thank you to our hospice nurse Christine Fowler.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the 26th & Connecticut Church of Christ. Jake King Minister will officiate. Entombment will be in a private mausoleum at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at Mason-Woodard Chapel.
