John B was the son of John Ownby and Mary Jane Coone-Ownby.In 1833, John B Ownby and his family migrated to Sevier County, Tennessee from Buncombe County, North Carolina. They made their home in the Glades community, 2nd Civil District of Sevier County, Tennessee.
He married Jane "Jennie" Whaley daughter of William M. and Mary Ann "Ogle" Whaley. They were married abt 1847 in Sevier County, Tennessee
John and Jennie Ownby had the following Children;
1. Sarah E "Sallie" Ownby
2. Sharon Miriam Ownby
3. William Harrison Ownby
4. Ownby
5. John Nelson "Injun John" Ownby
6. Ownby
7. Westley E. "West" Ownby
8. Mary Ann Ownby
