Samuel was the third child of John and Hannah Hall Kinney. He enlisted in the Army, at the beginning of the Civil War, representing Nebraska. He was deployed to Sitka, Alaska, then a part of Russia. He reached the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He died while in Sitka, in 1861. His death was ruled a suicide.
