Matilda was the daughter of Louis and Philaphena (nee Zimmerman) Keseberg, emigrants from Prussia and survivors of the Donner Party. At the age of 16, she wed Frederick Kummerfeldt on March 23, 1873 in Sacramento. Sadly, she died the following year of tuberculosis. She was the mother of Clara Matilda who also passed away later that same year.

Originally buried at New Helvetia Cemetery but was reinterred at the City Cemetery in 1956.
