East Moline, Ill. - Funeral services for Bernard J. "Barney" Cortez, 74 of East Moline, Ill., will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline, where he had been a member. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.. Mr. Cortez died Wednesday, October 26, 2005, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis, Ill. Memorials may be made to the family.
Mr. Cortez was born May 20, 1931, in Horton, Kan., the son of Don and Frances (Landin) Cortez. He married Lupe Vasquez on May 25, 1951, in Horton.
He served as a radio operator in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, where he flew in B-29s, including the "Enola Gay". He had worked at John Deere Harvester, East Moline, as a punch press operator, retiring in 1987 after 331 years of service.
He was a sports fan and had coached little league for many years. He loved his family, especially spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Lupe Cortez, of East Moline; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Dale Duckworth, of Davenport; sons and daughters-in-law. David Cortez, of East Moline, Larry and Bertha Cortez, of East Moline, Marcus and Laura Cortez, of Rock Island, Mario and Paola Cortez, of Silvis; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rita and Carlos Vasquez, of Calif., Juanita and Erwin Kimmi, of Horton, Julia and Arthur Rocha, of St. Joseph, Mo.; brothers and sisters-in-law, John Cortez, of St. Joseph, Mo., Fermin and Vicki Cortez, of Rock Island; and sister-in-law, Jenny Cortez, of East Moline.
He is preceded in death by his son, Bernard J. "Butch" Cortez Jr., who died in 1992, his parents. sister, Isabel Cortez, and brother Tony Cortez.
