Colfax – Ellis E. Abbott, a member of one of the pioneer families in the Colfax area, died early Friday morning at the Palouse Nursing Home here. He was 86.
Abbott, who had lived almost his entire life near this community, was born Jan. 17, 1894, to S.J. and Hattie Abbott. His parents were one of the first couples to establish a farm in the area near Colfax and Abbott worked on the farm many years.
On April 2, 1916, he married Bernice Halling at Colfax and they continued operating the farm. They lived in the area throughout their marriage. She died on March 4, 1969. After his wife's death, Abbott lived for a short time in Spokane and then moved to Rathdrum, Idaho, for another short stay. He them moved back to Colfax and had lived at the nursing home for the past few years.
Abbott was one of the charter members of the North-South Palouse Grange and belonged to the Hiram Masonic Lodge No. 21, F & AM. He was also a member of the Assembly of God Church in Colfax.
Abbott is survived by five sons, one of Lacrosse, one of Colfax, one of Potlatch, and two of Spokane; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. [Survivor names omitted per Find a Grave policy.]
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, with the Rev. Walter E. Russell of the Nazarene Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
