Carter Gilroy Messer, age 85, of Raven, Virginia, passed away Friday, June 28, 2013 at his home.

He was born in Aufier, Kentucky and was the son of the late George Edward and Julia Newman Messer.

He was a retired mine operator and was a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Steele Horn; three children; three sisters, and one brother.

One Brother: Charles Messer of Austin, Texas

Funeral services for Carter Messer will be conducted Monday, July 1, 2013 at 4:00pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Rick Whitt officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Members of the American Veterans Association Honor Guard will conduct military graveside rites. Pallbearers will be: Evans Horne, Bo Perkins, Jordan Reedy, Greg Vandyke, Timothy Gilbert, Alexander Gilbert, Clayton Gilbert, and Kevin McGlothlin. Friends may call after 6pm Sunday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia.
