Olga Unterseher Aaby passed away in Lodi on Thursday, July 8, 2010, at the age of 93, following an extended illness. Born on June 7, 1917, in South Dakota to John and Kathrina Unterseher, she with her twin sister Olivia experienced the prairie homestead life with their nine siblings.
After graduating from the eighth grade at the "Unterseher School," Olga received her high school diploma from Maplewood Academy in Hutchinson, Minnesota, where she met Maynard Aaby. They eventually married in Lincoln, Nebraska, while attending Union College. Maynard later graduated with a D.D.S. degree from the University of
Nebraska School of Dentistry in 1944.
Olga and Maynard moved to Walla Walla, WA and had three children, Joyce, Janis, and Royal. Eventually the family settled in Tracy, CA, where Maynard practiced for over 25 years. Then nearing retirement, the couple moved to Groveland, CA, establishing a new Seventh-day Adventist church there. Following Maynard's death in 1984, Olga moved to Lodi, CA to be near her oldest daughter, Joyce Conner.
An avid 15 handicap golfer in later years, Olga also enjoyed gardening, picking and canning fruit, making jam, quilting, baking cookies, entertaining dinner guests, playing table games with friends, enjoying the grandchildren, and singing for church and community functions, both as a soloist and as a member of the choir. She was a life-long Seventh-day Adventist Christian and member of Lodi Fairmont SDA Church.
Olga was preceded in death by her parents, John and Kathrina Unterseher, sisters Otillia Unterseher and Olivia Zweigle, brothers Walter, Jonathan, Ed, and Al Unterseher, infant son Danny Bruce Aaby, and loving husband of 42 years Maynard Aaby.
She is survived by sisters Florence Nielsen and Lillian Nielson, both of Lincoln, NE, and brother Elmer Unterseher, of Forest Grove, OR; children Joyce Conner of Lodi; Janis (Wendel) Tucker of Riverside; and son Royal (Viki) Aaby of Tracy; seven grandchildren (Lisa Tucker, Michael (Alana) Tucker, Kimberly (Randy) Burkholz, Kelly Conner, Karyn Conner, Julianne (Randy) Gordon, and Jana-lee (Richard) Cecchi; and five great-grandchildren, Hannah Lei and Cole Burkholz; Jake and Paige Gordon, and Rafe Tucker. Her sweet, gentle nature and generous spirit will be missed and celebrated by countless friends and many other relatives who knew her over the years.
Olga was laid to rest in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Groveland, CA, beside Maynard in a family graveside service on Sunday, July 11, 2010.
