OBITUARY: Alice I. Chapman, 88, reprinted from the September 5, 2002 River Falls Journal

Alice Irene Chapman, 88, of River Falls, died Sept. 2, at the River Falls Area Hospital.

The daughter of John and Mary (Marešh) Bartosh, she was born Dec. 26, 1913, in Pierce County. She graduated from River Falls High School and River Falls State Teachers College.

On Dec. 14, 1940, she married Thomas Chapman at her parents' home.

Mrs. Chapman worked as a bookkeeper for Consolidated Lumber, River Falls Federal Savings and Loan and the River Falls Area Hospital. She was one of the first life guards at the municipal pool.

Her family said she enjoyed swimming, fishing, gardening and making cookies with her grandchildren. She also loved to spend time at the couple's cabin on Round Lake, where they moved to during retirement before returning to River Falls.

Mrs. Chapman was a Gold Star Mother who lost her son in the Vietnam War.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas Chapman; son, John Chapman; and brothers: Clair and Earl Bartosh.

Mrs. Chapman is survived by her daughter, Cassie Chapman of McMinnville, Tenn.; daughter-in-law, Sandra Chapman of Kansas City, Kan., granddaughters: Janet (Wade) Chapman Belden, Christy Underkofler, and Misty Underkofler; great-granddaughter, Jade Belden; and many more relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held Sept. 4, at Bakken-Young Funeral Home with Pastor Janet Ellinger from the United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery.

The family asks memorials be directed to the Ellsworth Care Center Special Care Unit.

Arrangements were with Bakken-Young Funeral and Cremation Services of River Falls.
