Leonard Brown was born in Waterloo Township, Athens County, August 19, 1817. He removed to Albany, Ohio, and was a member of the Town Council for several years. On removing to Athens he became proprietor of the old hotel known as the "Brown House," so long kept by General John Brown. He was a man of great personal courage in adhering to his own convictions and held with unswerving tenacity to his views of right and wrong. He filled with popular approbation the office of Sheriff for one term and County Treasurer for two terms. He died at Woodbury, New Jersey, January 8, 1892.
