Dan (nickname Zumbo) was the eldest child of Richard Marvin Zimmer and Marie Gertrude Granger. He was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated from Alter High School (Class of 68) in Kettering, Ohio then attended General Motors Institute and Cuyahoga Community College. He moved to Tallahassee Florida in the early 1980s.
