John was the third of ten known children born to Hamilton Jett of Lawrence County, Mississippi, and the youngest of three children born to Hamilton Jett's second wife, Martha E. McGraw. He was married in Lawrence County, MS on 18 May 1854 to Martha Fox, b. NC c. 1836, living in 1880, but dead by 1910, the daughter of Richard Fox and Mary Thomas of North Carolina and Lawrence Co., Mississippi.
John and Martha both appear with their respective parents in Lawrence Co., MS in 1850, and in 1860 were living there, married, with two children. By 1864 they were living in Texas, and in 1870 they were living in Harrison Co., TX with three children. In 1880, John is not found, but Martha, age 46, was living in Marion Co., TX with her brother, Robert L. Fox, age 64, her sister, Jane T/F _______, age 56, her daughter, Mollie E. Kibbey, age 25, grandson Alfred E. Kibbey, age 5, daughter Jane T. Jette, age 22, son Richard H. Jette, age 15, and daughter Bobbie L. Jette, age 8. Also in the household was Mollie T. Fox, age 22, no relationship given. In the 1910 census John M. Jett was widowed and living in Jasper County, TX with his nephew Gustave Adolphus Bilbo and wife Elmira (Martindale) Bilbo. In that census, Jett was incorrectly given the middle initial E instead of M, his age was slightly overstated as being 80, and his father's birthplace was given as Louisiana (no, he lived in Louisiana as a young man, but was born in Virginia).
