John learned the paper making trade from his father in Dansville, NY. He left for Canton, Ohio shortly after the death of his father. Shortly after arriving in Canton, he married Eusebia Catherine Shorb. They soon started a family with the arrival of Mark.

The Civil War was breaking out and John did his duty. He became a seaman on the USS Indianola. His duty on the Idianola was short lived as the ship was sunk and he was taken prisoner. Within ten days, he was sent home in a prisoner exchange.
