George Washington Butler was the sixth child of William Andrew Butler, Jr. (who was known as "Uncle Billy" Butler, b.1/15/1814 in Paris, Bourbon Co, KY, d.10/16/1883 in Greenpond, Pike Co, IL) and Harriet Chandler (b.5/15/1815 in New York City, New York.)
George married first on 10/29/1884 in Pike Co, IL to Emily Jesse Etna Belle Long (b. 7/19/1864 in Pike Co, IL, d. 11/27/1893 in Pike Co, IL). Her parents were William Franklin Long (b. BEF. 1850, and first known son of Abner Nelson Long) and Charlotte Hatcher (b. BEF. 1850.).
George's second marriage was on 11/4/1900 in Strout, Pike, Co, IL to Josephine 'Dolly' Long (b. 11/30/1865 in Montezuma, Pike Co, Il, d. 3/9/1923 in Granite City, Madison co, IL). George was her childhood sweetheart. They were married by Rev. David Foreman, harness maker and circuit riding preacher. (George's sister Edna Jane married a Garrison.)
A preacher came to Pearl, IL and talked George into moving his family down to Cabool, Texas Co, MO, but the soil had too many rocks and was not good for farming so they moved back to Pearl. Pearl area had some of the best soil in the country...black gold, river bottom land. George, Dolly, and their two small children 'Bill' and Nellie were living around Houston in Piney Township, Texas Co, MO in 1910 (from 1910 fed census.)
George had a meat market in Pearl, and then opened one in Granite City, IL. George and Dolly lived on Benton St., Granite City, IL.
