Joseph Edward Coleman was born to John and Martha A. Coleman. He became a saddler by trade in following his father's trade. He married Ella Lee Ackerly in Bristol, Sullivan Co., Tn. on Dec.22, 1880. They moved to Kent Island, Queen Anne Co., Maryland about 1883. Here Joseph was a merchant and for a time was the keeper of Bloody Pointe Light off the coast of southern Kent Island in the Chesapeake Bay. He and Ella had seven children: John William (b.1882), Lenora May (1884-1886), Joseph Edward,Jr.(b. 1886), Verre Ackerly (b. 1888), James Elton (b.1891), George Robert (b.1894), and Leona May (b. 1896). Joseph died of pneumonia at age 41, Feb. 18, 1898 at his home in Crab Alley Neck on Kent Island, Maryland.
