My Dad was born October 30, 1924. He graduated from Rome Free Academy and the Utica School of Commerce. Dad served as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy, stationed on Guam, during WWII.

He worked his entire life for Spargo Wire Company. In 1985 the New England Wire & Cable Club awarded Dad its Charles D. Scot Distinguished Career Award. The citation reads:

"In recognition of dedicated and enduring service to the wire industry, the members of the New England Wire and Cable Club have selected James A. Spargo III, as a recipient of its Distinguished Career Award Industry colleagues salute the recipient for professional attainments and commend the recipient for those outstanding qualities of mind and character which he or she steadfastly demonstrated during the recipient's long and illustrious career………."

Dad retired from Spargo Wire in 1989, but came to work every day to read the newspaper and spend time in the mill visiting his old-timer friends. He usually arrived around 9 A.M. and left at noon. He'd always tell me, "Arriving late and leaving early, makes for a short day".

My father died, July 30, 1993. Visitors paying their respects at his wake ranged from a shoemaker, to distinguished businessmen from all over the northeast.

It's been 20 years since my Dad died, and not a day goes by that I don't think of him.
