Mrs. Hollis Marie Awbrey Crockett, age 93, of Franklin passed away October 27, 2020.
Her funeral services will be conducted Friday October 30, 2020 at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Stutts Funeral Home with Rev. Neil Awbrey officiating.
The eulogy will be given by B. J. Bowers. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery.
Those serving as pall bearers will be Stevie Boat, Mark Kirby, Joe Adams, Eric Yarbrough, Jason Richmond, Bruce Feazell, and Mikey Howard. Those serving as honorary pall bearers will be Bill Brown and Mike Hicks.
The family will accept guests at Stutts Funeral Home Friday afternoon from 12:00 – 2:00 PM.
Mrs. Crockett was born April 3, 1927 in Heard County to the late Alfred Warner Awbrey and Willie Lula Cook Awbrey. She was retired from Callaway Mills, where she worked in the office.
As a descendant of Heard County pioneer families, one of her passions was the preservation of local history. She was a very active member of the Heard County Historical Society for which she served as an officer and on several committees.
She also donated or loaned many items to the Heard County Historical Center and Museum that were put on display to visitors.
She lived on land that was part of her husband’s ancestral farm from the fourth generation from Rush Overton Crockett.
The barn located on the property was registered as a Leaning Barn of Heard County from the 19’th century.
She was proud of her heritage, and was a charter member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy Heard County Chapter #2587, the James Stewart Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, and the William Wofford Chapter Colonial Dames. She was also a member of the National Society Magna Charta Dames and Barons.
At the age of 90, she was honored by the James Stewart Chapter with the Woman in History Award for her many contributions to each organization and her service to her community. A plaque honoring her was displayed at the DAR Museum in Washington, DC.
She was the oldest living member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, where she served as the secretary and treasurer for 50 years. She was also a member of the Feisty Red Hatters of Glenn, where she was named the Queen Mother.
Mrs. Crockett was involved in a number of local community service projects, including the Heard County Food Pantry and the Sheriff’s Office Toy Drive.
She was a loving, kind, tender-hearted woman who made many friends and was a cherished companion to everyone. She loved to travel around the world with her sisters. One of her most treasured memories was being baptized in the Jordan River during a trip to Israel and the Holy Land.
Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Norred of Roanoke, Susan Jacks (Donald) of Ringgold, and Lisa Richmond (Jason) of Marietta; one son, Richard Crockett (Teresa) of Woodland, AL; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mona Bess Gamble and Norma June Golden; and a number of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Brannon Crockett, Sr., a son and daughter-in-law, David and Suzi Crockett, a son-in-law, Jerry Norred, and twelve brothers and sisters.
