Mabel Fleetwood of Freetown, a devoted and faithful wife and mother, loved her family deeply. She was a very devoted Christian, a selfless caregiver to family and friends, most especially to those in need. Mabel went to be with her Lord Sunday, June 16, 2013. She passed into eternity at her home, She was 98.
Mabel was born into a family of 11. Only three survive, Opal Hanlan and Junior Wineinger of Ohio and Max Dean Wineinger of Columbus, IN.
Born March 28, 1915, Mabel married Elmo Fleetwood who preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons, Louis (Dorothy) Fleetwood, Seymour, and Jewell (Leona) Fleetwood, Columbus; nine grandchildren, Daniel (Betsy) Fleetwood, Columbus; Gregory Fleetwood, Columbus; Angela Fleetwood, Chesapeake, OH; Ramona Fleetwood, Columbus; Melanie (Tom) Stevens, Indianapolis; Matthew Fleetwood, Columbus; Michael (Ardith) Fleetwood, Seymour; Stephanie (Chris) Burton, Edinburgh; and Jonathan (Mary) Fleetwood, Blythewood, S.C. Also surviving are 14 great-grandchildren: Cody (Emily) Fleetwood, Columbus; Aaron, Zachary and Nathan Fleetwood, Brentwood, TN; Bradley and Blair Stevens, Amber and Briana Fleetwood of Indianapolis; Tanner Fleetwood, Palm Bay, FL; Holden, Lauren and Harrison Fleetwood, Seymour; and Jacob and Sarah Fleetwood of Blythewood, S.C.
Mabel had one great-great-grandchild, Zoe Elizabeth Fleetwood, Columbus, IN.
Mabel loved and worshiped her Savior. She was a member of the body of Christ and attended and was a lifelong member of Surprise Christian Church. With delight, Mabel chose to wear a variety of hats. Mabel loved flowers and gardening. She loved to attend various ladies groups and travel with them. She enjoyed going to the Freetown Community Center to listen to gospel music and to enjoy a meal with her friends. She also enjoyed traveling to the Senior Centers for food and fellowship with her friends.
She enjoyed watching the Pacers play and was surprised and overjoyed when her great-grandson Cody and wife Emily took her to see a Pacers game where she was introduced and recognized at center court.
Mabel and Elmo owned and operated the Surprise Grocery and owned and operated Freetown Hardware Store for many years. Mabel worked in many restaurants, both in Seymour and Brownstown, was an in-home caregiver to many of the elderly and wrote news articles for years about the Acme-Surprise Community for The Banner.
Mabel loved to travel. Mabel and Elmo had an invalid son, Gerald. Gerald never walked. He wanted to see the Grand Canyon and the ocean. Mabel took him to see the Grand Canyon and to Miami, FL, to see the ocean. She also took him to the Grand Old Opry in Nashville, TN, where he met many of the country singing stars. She and Louis took Gerald to the Bill Monroe Blue Grass Festival. Gerald loved country music and the travel. Gerald lived to age 56 but only by the grace of God and the constant care Mabel and Elmo provided. Indeed, to the family, it was fitting for mom to go and be with her Heavenly Father on Father's Day and most especially, on a Sunday.
Visitation will be Saturday, June 22, 2013, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Winklepleck-Weesner Funeral Home in Brownstown. The service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2013, at the Surprise Christian Church, with viewing from 1:30 p.m. to service time. Burial will be at the Acme Cemetery.
