Herald Coaster, March 5, 2002:

Robert Lee "R.L." Beard died peacefully Sunday, March 3, 2002, with his family around him. He was born in Richmond on May 29, 1921 and left the area only for a four-year stint in the U.S. Army.

R.L. was the owner of Beard's Floor Co. for many years and also built and operated Beard's Bowling Center along with his father, Lee, and brother, Leldon. He also co-owned Yale Street Driving Range in Houston.

After graduating from Rosenberg High School, R.L. attended Baylor University, Texas A&M University, the University of New Hampshire, and New York City College.

He was an active member of the Rosenberg Jaycees, a charter member of the Fort Bend County Club where he twice served on the Board of Directors, and he was an elder of the Presbyterian Church.

R.L. enjoyed many sports and at various times in his life participated actively in many of them. Those included hunting, fishing, tennis, badminton, bowling, and the lasting pleasure of his life, golf. He was a former Senior Champion of Fort Bend Country Club and passed his love of the game on to his family.

He felt his greatest accomplishments in life were the children born of his 47-year marriage to his wife, Carolyn, and they are, Jay and daughters, Lindsey and Courtney; Lyn Gaas and her husband, Richard, and children, Richard Lee, Michael, and Rachel; Neal and his wife, Marguerite, and daughters, Emma and Ginny. R.L. is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Leldon and Marge Beard; his sister, Elouise Beard Smith; his mother-in-law, Lillian Bedford; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Ruby Beard.

A man of the "old school," R.L. believed his word was his bond, and a handshake meant a deed was to be done. He had an opinion or saying for every occasion and passed his beliefs on to his children. He will be quoted, honored, and loved by those he cared about for generations to come.

The family would like to publicly express their gratitude to all those at Kateland Square Geriatric Center, his home for the last six months. They were unfaltering in the loving care they gave R.L.
