"DEATH OF N.J. WALBRIDGE
Stricken Suddenly While Working at His Home on Stevens Street Monday Forenoon.
He was an Exemplary Citizen.
Early Monday forenoon, while working on a bench on which to place wash tubs at his home, Nelson J. Walbridge was suddenly stricken with heart failure while pulling nails out of a box. His little grandson, William Stilwell, who was visiting there,
saw that something was wrong and asked, “What’s the matter, Grandpa?” as Mr. Walbridge rested his head upon his hand. He did not reply but after being helped to bed was conscious and answered questions put to him. A physician was hurriedly called who administered heart stimulants, but that organ did not respond to the usual treatment and he passed from life about an hour and a half after the seizure. Deceased had been subject to sudden heart attacks for the past five years.
Mr. Walbridge was a most kindly and exemplary man and deeply religious,
a devoted member of Centenary M.E. Church and of the Baraca class, who was never absent from the services when his health would permit him to be present. His nature was loving, sympathetic and serene, and he was always doing kindly acts for others. He was a deeply conscientious and upright citizen, an affectionate husband and father and a true neighbor and friend. He was born in Bellmont December 25, 1846, the son of Wayne Walbridge, one of the early settlers of that town, and resided there and followed farming until he came to this village in 1892, where he has since resided. Here he followed the carpenter’s trade, and acted as janitor of the M.E. church and Flanders school as long as his health would permit, and later became janitor of the Raymond street school near his home. He had been a steward of the M.E. church for many years.
Mr. Walbridge married for his first wife Miss Louise Howe, of Bellmont, sister to Earl and Jemime Howe. She died about 30 years ago. His second wife, who survives him, was Mrs. Clara Nokes, of Bellmont. Three children and two step-children also survive. These are Karl Walbridge of Malone; Ralph Walbridge of Oxford, N.Y.; Mrs. Earl Cox of Whitewater, Wis; William Nokes of Springfield, Mass and Mrs. Charles Stilwell of Maryville, MO. There are fourteen grandchildren and step-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Jennie Briggs, of Gouverneur. Mrs. Cox and Mrs. Stilwell were visiting here when Mr. Walbridge was stricken and Ralph Walbridge and William Nokes had recently visited here, so all the children and step-children had enjoyed the pleasure of being with him before his death. The sympathy of the community goes out to all these in their sudden bereavement. The funeral takes place from the residence this (Wednesday) afternoon, Rev. W.D. Marsh officiating; interment in Bellmont."
