Born in North Royalton, Ohio
William Marvin Carter grew up in Royalton Twp., Cuyahoga County, Ohio, along with 6 siblings. Both of his parents, John, a wheelwright, and Elizabeth were born in England. William, at 20 years of age, enlisted in the 128th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Dec. 17, 1863. Three days later he was mustered into Company F. He was mustered out at CampChase, Ohio, July 13, 1865, after the end of the Civil War. His name is on Panel #18 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio. William did not appear in the 1870 U.S. Census. He married Elizabeth A. Turney, Oct. 1, 1873 in Cuyahoga County. They had four children. William supported his family through farming. He applied for a soldier's invalid pension, March 11, 1891, which was approved and issued as Certificate #772456. Elizabeth died March 5, 1918. The 1930 U.S. Census for Cleveland showed that he resided at 3730 W. 39th St., with his daughter, Bessie, her husband and children. While there he became a member of Brooklyn Post #368, Grand Army of the Republic. William died there after fracturing his left femur due to a fall. at 87 years of age. He and Elizabeth are buried together in North Royalton Cemetery.
