The following was added by Howard Burough, the creator of this memorial:

He was born on January 20th, 1839, in South Carolina, the son of Samuel James and Virginia Sarah Wilson Bailey.

He served in the American Civil War being appointed as an Assistant Surgeon in the Confederate States Medical Department on September 13th, 1861, from the State of Georgia, and was assigned to duty at Camp Allegheny in Staunton, Virginia, and later at the General Hospital in Staunton, Virginia. On April 15th, 1862, he was ordered to report to Major General James Longstreet, CSA, for active duty, and was promoted to Regimental Surgeon of the Palmetto Sharpshooters Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers, on July 18th, 1862. He served with the Palmetto Sharpshooters until September 25th, 1864, when he was transferred as Regimental Surgeon to the 1st (Hagood's) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment. With this regiment he continued until he surrendered with the regiment on April 9th, 1865, at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, being paroled on April 14th, 1865, at Danville, Virginia.

Following the Civil War he returned to South Carolina and was married to Miss Augusta Louise Bradford on February 7th, 1866, at Beech Island, South Carolina, and the couple went on to have seven children. Angus W. Bailey died on July 18th, 1899.
