Middle River - John "Jack" Rybakowski, 81, died on Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at the CNC unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 8 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Middle River with Father John Braukmann officiating. Cathy Erickson was the organist. Amber Rybakowski was the proclaimer of Scripture and provided special music. Casketbearers were George Rybakowski, Richard Rybakowski, Calvin Rybakowski, Matthew Rybakowski, Adam Rybakowski and Edward Pulczinski. Military honors were accorded by the Middle River American Legion. Burial was in St. Bernard's Cemetery in Thief River Falls. The Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

John Rybakowski was born on November 12, 1917 in Chicago, IL, the son of John and Valoria (Olander) Rybakowski-Fisher. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. During the early 1920's the family moved to Fairmont. In 1926 they moved to Newfolden where John attended school in rural Newfolden and Middle River. In 1932 they moved to the Middle River area where his father started the foundry where Jack was employed. In 1940 the Fisher Foundry was moved into Middle River. Following school, Jack worked for International Harvester in Chicago, IL.

In 1941 he entered the U.S. Army, 40th Division. He was stationed at Fort Roberts, CA and also served in the Philippines for four and one-half years. He was honorably discharged on June 13, 1945.

Following his military discharge Jack worked as a mechanic for Gibb Overvold Motors in Middle River. Later he worked with his dad before taking over the foundry in 1961. In 1974 he retired from the foundry and went to work for Rudy Borg Construction, cutting trees and clearing land. After retiring in the early 1980's he sharpened saws for his neighbors and friends. He had lived with his nephew and niece, George and Cindy Rybakowski since 1996 and at the CNC unit of Northwest Medical Center since November of 1998.

Jack played the accordion and was a member of the Jackie Williams Band and the Alley Cats Band during the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. He enjoyed driving and visiting with friends and family. He was known to many as "Uncle Jack."

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Middle River, the American Legion of Middle River and the VFW of Thief River Falls.

Jack is survived by one sister, Agnes Polansky of Lake Villa, IL; one sister-in-law; one brother-in-law; three godchildren, Richard Rybakowski and Willy and Elmer Green; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Isabel Manko and Delores Rybakowski; one brother, Raymond Rybakowski; one half sister, Margaret Green; and one half brother, Frank Jasnoch.
