Old Settler Dead
M.S. Underwood, an old settler of Clay county died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alfred Anderson near Royal Monday at twelve o'clock.
Mr. Underwood was born at Manchester, England, seventy-one years ago. He came to America when he was eighteen years old, and lived at a number of places. Settled first in Pennsylvania, later in Ohio, and worked in coal mines. At one time he owned and operated a mine at Streetor, Illinois. He came to Iowa in an early day and worked at coal mining around Fort Dodge, and forty years ago came to Spencer and took a homestead in Clay township, moving from there about three years ago to Spencer, but lately has been at the home of his daughter near Royal.
Mr. Underwood was a fine man, and had a lot of close friends in this county. He was a great reader and student of national affairs. He was a kind father and husband.
The funeral will be held at Royal this afternoon, the services to be conducted by Rev. J.O. Thrush, pastor of the Congregational church of Spencer, and interment will be in Riverside cemetery.
Mr. Thrush was the officiating minister at the funeral of Mrs. Underwood twenty-two years ago.
He leaves five children all living in and around Royal but one son. The children are Mrs. J.B. Deegan, Alfred, Mrs. Alfred Anderson, W.F. and Leslie E., the latter living at Emmetsburg.
