Daniel Van Buren Barnhouse (1870 - 1947)
Susannah "Susie" Wilson (1869 - 1933)

ON APRIL 26, 1910,
Nellie, age 18, lived in Lee, Calhoun Co, WV with her parents, Daniel & Susannah Barnhouse, ages 40, who owned a farm. Her parents had been married 19 years; her mother had given birth to 9 children - all living.

Other members of the large household included Nellie's siblings: Ethel, age 16; Cecil, 14; Vergil, 12; Allen, 10; Cybil, 8; Ralph, 6; Lora, 4; & Cathlene, 2.

Everyone was born in WV. At this time Nellie had a job doing housework in a "private family."

Nellie's sister, Ruby, was born in WV before the family moved to Pope Co, AR where they bought a farm.

Nellie was 20 years old when she married George Edward May, 22, in Calhoun, WV on March 2, 1911.

Their union produced nine children: Gerildean Georgia, Denver, Dwight Archie, Evelyn, Doff, Valgene, Polean, George W., and Geneva.

George & Nellie's first two children, Georgia & Denver, were born in WV. They were living in Pope Co, AR when Nellie gave birth to their son, Dwight in 1915.

On Sept. 12, 1918, George, age 24, & Nellie were living in Nogo, Pope Co, AR where he was farming when he registered for the WWI draft. The date of his birth was shown as March 5, 1884. His physical description was medium height & build, blue eyes, & light colored hair.

ON JAN. 13/14, 1920,
George & Nelly, ages 35 & 28, owned a farm in Smyrna, Pope Co, AR. Their children were shown as Georgia, age 8, and Dennis, 5, both born in WV; Durite (Dwight), 3 years, 4 months, OK; & Evaline, 2 years 9 months, both born in AR.

ON APRIL 3, 1940,
George & Nellie May, ages 54 & 47, were renting a home in Smyrna, Pope Co, AR. Their children were Denver, age 26; Dwight, 24; Doff, 19 (son); Valjean, 17 (son); Pauline, 13; Georgia, 11; Geneva, 6. George & Nellie's grandson, Joe B.May, age 5, lived with them.

George & his sons were farming to help support their large family. Well, except Doff, who was working for the CCC. This was The Civilian Conservation Corps created by President Roosevelt to put young men to work during the depression days.

George died in Nogo, Pope Co, AR on March 1, 1948. Nellie was living in Russellville when she died on January 25, 1964.
