John Frank Leysath died of a gunshot wound sustained during a fight with a tenant farmer named Jim Amaker on Oct 18, 1918. A newspaper article about the incident says that Mr. Leysath was "the most extensive farmer in this section of the state."

He had been married to Carrie Elizabeth Blain for about 2 years. The couple had one child, John Robinson Leysath, born in 1918.

The 1920 US Census shows his widow Carrie living with her parents and her son in Elizabeth Twp, Orangeburg, SC. Sometime after 1920, Carrie married James Earnest Leysath, the brother of her first husband.

James Earnest Leysath is listed in the 1930 US Census living in North, SC with wife Carrie and stepson John.
