Joseph M. Bartlett, for many years a well known farmer of this county, but for the past few years retired, died at his home on Liberty Street, Centreville, last Tuesday afternoon, after an illness of a few days.

The deceased had not been in good health for several weeks, and on Saturday suffered a severe attack of illness and grew worse rapidly until his death.

Mr. Bartlett was born July 6th 1857, in Talbot County, and was a son of the late Francis Asbury Bartlett and Martha J. Stack Bartlett. When quite a young man he engaged in farming and the greater part of his life had lived in Queen Anne's County, where he was recognized as a most successful agriculturist. About ten years ago he retired from farming and moved to Centreville, where he has since made his home.

Mr. Bartlett married Miss Mary Cannon, of this county. She survives him with the following sons and daughters: J. Percy Bartlett of Smyrna, Del.; Royce K. Bartlett of Jersey City, New Jersey, and Vaughn C. Bartlett, who for some months has been a patient at State Sanitarium, and Mrs. J. Harry Anthony, of Seaford, Delaware; Mrs. C. Tilghman Bishop, of Carmichael; Mrs. Marion D. Mullikin of Centreville, and Mrs. Robert LeCompte of Danbury, Connecticut. He also leaves three sisters: Mrs. James H. Carter, and Mrs. J. E. Bailey of this county, and Mrs. William F. Anthony of Philadelphia.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Centreville Methodist Episopal Church, and were conducted by Rev. Luther E. Poole, pastor of the church. Interment was in Chesterfield Cemetery. The pall-bearers were: James H. Carter, John E. Bailey, R. Frank Eaton, R. Bascom Eaton, F. Gurney Jump and Charles E. Cannon.
