Gabriel D. Bross, the son of Gabriel Bross and Martha Dickinson, was born in New Jersey in 1817. He and Eliza Martin, who was also born in New Jersey (ca 1814), were married in that same state in Sussex County on October 31, 1835.

During the next 20 years, the Bross's became the parents of seven known children - four boys and three girls. The year 1850 finds them living in Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey.

In 1855, shortly after the birth of their last child, the family relocated to Poweshiek County, Iowa as the first known white family to settle in that area.

Initially, Mr. Bross ran a tavern, and later he engaged in farming. In 1868, he purchased a farm in Madison Township. He was a preacher, speaking from the pulpit locally, as well as traveling to various congregations within the surrounding area.

In 1880, Gabriel and Eliza were living in Madison, Poweshiek, Iowa, presumably on the farm they purchased in 1868. While Eliza kept house, Gabriel was engaged in farming, as were sons Samuel, James, and Parks, who were living with their parents.

Eliza died in 1881, and Gabriel remarried Elizabeth A Longenhaws, daughter of David Longerbean and Eliza Henry on 07 September 1882 in Grinnell, Poweshiek, Iowa. Elizabeth, who was declared to have been previously married to a man by the surname of Hass was born in Ohio in 1841. Therefore, at age 64, Gabriel would have been 24 to 25 years her senior.*

Lizzie, as she was known, was declared to be a resident at a home in Madison, Poweshiek, Iowa with Gabriel and his sons Samuel, James, and Parkson in 1885. Oddly, she is also declared at a second residence, also in 1885 in Brooklyn, Bear Creek, Poweshiek, Iowa with her 9 year old son, Earnest A Hass, and under her proper name of Elizabeth A. Bross.

This can actually be easily explained by two different respondents providing details to census takers at each residence, but in any event, it does seem she had a presence in both homes.

The following year, in 1886, Gabriel Bross passed away and came to be buried in Blair Cemetery. Having lived in Poweshiek County for a good part of his life, and with his first wife and two daughters already having been buried in that location, it is difficult to fathom him being brought to Blair simply for burial.

I can only guess he may have been put under the care of his son, John H., shortly before his passing, but this remains to be seen.

Known children, ~ all children are said to have been born in New Jersey:

1) Mary E Bross Newkirk, Oct. 23, 1836 - Feb. 11, 1868. Married Eldridge Newkirk on 25 Nov 1857 in Poweshiek, Iowa. Relocated to Oregon and is buried there.

2) Samuel G Bross, b 1838-40, in 1880, he was a farm worker, single, year of birth declared as 1839, and he was living with his birth family.

Samuel was living with his brother, John H., and his family at the time of both the 1900 and 1900 census's. Those records indicated was born in March 1840.

His burial location has not yet been discovered.

3) Meriba Bross Gilmore, b 1840 (buried in same cemetery as her mother)

4) John H Bross, b 1842

5) Emma Jane Bross Neff, b 1845 ~ d 1883 and buried in the same cemetery as her mother.
Married S.C. Neff, b Ohio

Known Children:
Grace E Neff, b ca 1867, IA
Ralph A Neff, b ca 1869, IA
X Cora Elizabeth Neff Johnson, 19 Mar 1875 in Brooklyn, Iowa - 20 Mar 1919 in Fairbury, Livingston, Il ~ 22 Mar 1919 in Brooklyn, Iowa ~ Md George Johnson
X Edith Neff Magann
X Clark S.
X Guy G. (she died less than a month before his death)

Possibly Lena Stull

6) James N Bross, b 1849-53 ~ in 1880 he was widowed and a farm worker and living with his birth family. His age has differed when given at various points in time - 1850 ( 1 y/o) in the 1870 census; 1851-52 in the 1880 census.

There is a James A. Bross who married Rosa Whaley on 14 Jan 1872 in Brooklyn, Poweshiek, Iowa (Iowa, Marriages, 1809-1992). Despite the difference in the middle initial, a handwritten N can easily be mistaken for a handwritten A, so I feel it is entirely possible, but not proven, that this is him.

If it is him, Rosa would have passed away in or before the year of 1880, as James declared himself as widowed during the census of that year.

7) Parkson A Bross (aka Parks, Parker), 1853-54 ~ in 1880, he was a farm worker, single, and living with his birth family. Said to be age 22 at the time of the 1880 census, making his birth year ca 1857-58.

A son was born to Gabriel and Eliza Bross on 10 May 1853 in Lafayette, Sussex, NJ and christened in Sussex, New Jersey. This son is not identified by proper name, but his birth year would be consistent with that of son, James, and son, Parkson. ~ "New Jersey, Births and Christenings, 1660-1980"

Footnotes:

* If Gabriel was actually 64 years old when he married Elizabeth Longenhaws on September 7, 1882, and his given bith year of 1817 is correct, that would mean that his birth day was after September 7th.

NOTE: Caroline M. Dedrick, age 16, Illinois, Servant, parents born in Germany ~ living with the family in 1880.

NOTE: Eliza Bross's father was born in NY, and her mother was born in NJ.
