Our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend passed away from cancer on June 28, 2009 with her two daughters by her side. She was born in a log cabin in Leslie, Idaho on May 25, 1918 to William Thomas Tew Jr. and Jennie Maud Houtz she was the third of seven children. Helens growing up years were spent in Mapleton, UT and she attended school in Springville graduating from Springville High School in 1936. She also attended Brigham Young University.

Helen worked for the FBI for 14 years. She served an LDS mission to the East Central States Mission from 1937-1939 where her father was mission president and she also served as an ordinance worker in the Provo Temple for 14 years.

Helen married Joseph Worth Gutke on April 3, 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple. He died June 29, 1944. She then married Leo LeGrande Stirland on September 27, 1958 in the Swiss Temple. He died January 2, 1992.

Helen was active in the LDS Church serving faithfully in many organizations and as a visiting teacher for over 70 years. She was also an avid bridge player.

Helen was preceded in death by both husbands; sisters Merlene and Naoma; a brother, Thirl; and stepdaughter Bar Dee.

Our mother will be missed by her family: Daughters: Janet Worth Hargett, Patricia Lee Jeffery and Carolyn Marsh Lindsay (step daughter); Grandchildren Brandon (Brooke), Troy (Mandy) and Jason (Amyee) Hargett and Nathan, Sara and Steven Jeffery; 8 step grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 11 step great-grandchildren. She is also survived by Brothers Roy (Verna Vee), Dean (Myrna Lee), and Ronald Kay (Farris) Tew; and Sister-in-law, Yolande Tew.

Our family would like to thank First Home Health and Hospice for their kind and loving care especially Gina, Amy, Steve, Don and Emily.

Services will be held at the Hobble Creek LDS Church, 1440 E. 900 S., Springville at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2009. There will be a viewing held Wednesday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E. 200 S., Springville and Thursday at the church from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services.
