Funeral Services for John P. Tawes, 75, of here, who died September 19 at home of a heart attack were held September 22 at the Bradshaw and Sons Funeral Home here.
The Rev. Harley Krause officiated, assisted by the Rev. Percy N. Reese. Interment was at St. Paul's Cemetery in Marion.
Born in Crisfield, he was the son of the late J. Maurice Tawes and Leila B. Dana Tawes.
He attended Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, was a life member and past president of Crisfield Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the American Legion Stanley Cochrane Post No. 16 in Crisfield.
During the 1930s, Tawes worked for the Somerset County Roads Commission. Afterwards, he worked as banking examiner under State Banking Commissioner Warren Sterling. He was later chairman of Tidewater Fisheries Commission and also chairman of the Board of Natural Resources under Gov. Theodore McKeldin. That board is now known as the Department of Natural Resources.
Tawes also worked as equipment supervisor for the Maryland State Highway Administration under Gov. J. Millard Tawes.
Until his death he was a partner in Tawes Brothers Buick, Pontiac and GMC and Tawes Brothers Oil Co., both in Crisfield.
He was a member of the former Company L National Guard in Crisfield and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Lee Tawes of Crisfield; two brothers, Mr. Dana Tawes and Robert Lee Tawes, both of Crisfield; three nephews and one niece.
The family suggests donations in the memory of the deceased be made to the Crisfield Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 591, or the Lower Somerset County Ambulance and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 406, Crisfield, Md. 21817.
