Son of Hugh Francis Sweeney and Mary Jane O'Brien. Hugh was born in County Mayo, Ireland. Edward was one of 11 children. He was a banker until the Depression and then worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Chicago from 1940-1960 when he retired. He lived in Chicago his entire life.
He served in the US Army during WWI. He served in France, but never saw combat as it was near the end of the war.
He married Stella Mary Cigrand (daughter of Peter John Cigrand and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hort) in 1925. They had two sons, but one died within days of birth.
